Picture of the month - June 2025

Éruption solaire dans le système inox
SEM image of an interface between two stainless steels produced by two 3D printing technologies. On the left, a 17-4 PH substrate, printed and then sintered using a MIM-like process, shows a low-contrast equiaxed microstructure but high porosity. On the right, 316L deposited by WLAM (Wire Laser Additive Manufacturing) reveals a marked columnar microstructure, oriented according to the solidification thermal gradient, and a few porosities.

This sample was produced as part of a project between SIMaP and G-SCOP, supervised by Marion Coffigniez. The picture was taken by Julien Gallet and Sophie Badin.
