Observation of a Zr-rich primary phase in a cast Al-Fe-Cr-Zr alloy. Four symmetrical dendrites can be seen embedded in the aluminium matrix, with each branch comprising several Zr-rich sub-structures. The photograph was taken using the GeminiSEM 500.

Matthieu Ricard is in his third year of a CIFRE PhD with Constellium and works in the GPM2 team. His PhD research focuses on the effect of chemical composition on the productivity, the microstructure and mechanical properties of an aluminium alloy for additive manufacturing.
