My research projects focus on the development of advanced X-ray diffraction techniques using synchrotron radiation and using them for various problems of condensed matter physics.
Recent projects deal with:
- Imaging of strain and defects in nanocrystals using Coherent Bragg Imaging, in particular for the understanding of mechanical properties at the nanoscale. Recently we imaged for the first time a dislocation loop in a gold nanocrystal during in situ nanoindentation.
- A fundamental study of crystallographic "forbidden" reflections, their enhancement with resonant X-rays, and the information they provide on the local anisotropy of the resonant atoms. Recently we characterized the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (antisymmetric exchange coupling) in a series of weak ferromagnets.
- Quasicrystals and their periodic approximants. Recently we characterized the long range antiferromagnetic order in the series Cd6R (R=Rare-Earth) of approximants. They are of noteworthy interest, since the parent quasicrystals do not show long renage magnetic order.
- The development of a magnetic microscopy method using a combination of Fourier Transform Holography and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism, to image complex micromagnetic configurations in nanostructures.
