For steels, understanding the microstructure changes during thermal processing is important to achieve an excellent combination of mechanical and material properties. Although considerable research has been conducted in this area, the development of new experimental and numerical approaches opens up the opportunity to better understand the underlying mechanisms that govern these changes. In this presentation, I will highlight the use of synchrotron radiation multi-scale approaches to describe the microstructure changes of: (i) martensite and nano-bainite during tempering, and (ii) austenitic stainless steel during additive manufacturing.
