SIMaP is located on the East campus of Grenoble, in Saint Martin d'Hères, on approximately 9200 m2 of premises of Grenoble INP - UGA. Created in 2007, it is a joint research unit of CNRS, Grenoble INP - UGA and UGA.

Research at SIMaP

The laboratory brings together physicists, mechanics, and chemists working on objectives related to the design and development of materials and processes.

3 main themes

  • Processes development
  • Microstructure-architecture-property relationships
  • Durability of materials

Distinctive features

Research is carried out in an experimental framework covering elaboration, processes and characterization, as well as in a theoretical framework with simulations and modeling, covering almost all space and time scales.

  • In situ characterization (temperature, field, stress)
  • Coupling measurements (mechanical-electrical-chemical)
  • Synchrotron campaigns on low- and high-energy lines

Organization

SIMaP brings together about 200 collaborators: 60 researchers and lecturers, 15 emeritus professors, 42 technical and administrative staff, 80 PhD and post doc and about 30 trainees from engineer to master degrees.

Research groups

The laboratory is structured into 4 research groups which focus on the basic physics and physical chemistry, thermodynamics and kinetics, solid and fluid mechanics:

  • MME : Materials and Mechanical Engineering
  • PM : Physics of Metals
  • TOP : Thermodynamics, Modeling, Process Optimisation
  • EPM : Electromagnetic Processing of Materials

Sectors

Research at SIMaP is supported by core technical knowledge in:

  • Design, instrumentation, measurement
  • Characterization
  • Computers, networks and calculations
