Surface

Surface physicochemical properties take part in a great number of studies in the group: surface functionalization, corrosion resistance, metallurgical process, adhesion. Industrial partners have a great interest in this domain of expertise seeking for an improvement in the surface properties of materials (metals, glass or polymers). The group is then involved in long term partnership with steel companies like Ugine and Aperam group as well as several joint works with Framatome, CEA-Saclay or other industrial in confidential areas.
Our group possesses characterization equipment for surface chemical and physical analysis: an X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscope (XPS); stations for static and dynamic wettability measurements. Moreover, the recent upgrade of the photoelectrochemical microscopy installation, already one of the most efficient in the world, allows acquisition of energy spectra with a spatial resolution down to the micron scale thanks to a focused arc lamp.

PEC spallation Imaging

Chromia scales grown on pure chromium at high temperature and low p(O2) exhibit spalled zones. The decohesion takes place at the metal/oxide interface during the cooling. A microscopic view of generation and restoration of structural defects in chromia scales was produced by constructing of a specific photoelectrochemical image so-called SQI (see fig.7a).
