Mars 2018 - Se rater en beauté

Picture of the month - March 2018

A beautiful mistake
Tungsten, heated in air, oxidizes to give tungsten trioxide. Above 1100 °C, this WO3 sublimates as soon as it is formed. The image presented here has been obtained with EFI (Extended Focus Image) mode on an optical microscope. It shows WO3 cristals grown on an insulator surface, after an induction heating test on tungsten, presumptively in air.
